Taking over what was a defunct exotic pet store,
Petshop was founded as a studio & gallery space in June 2012 by Ben McQuillan, Jamie Danielle Hardy, & Alex Jochim.
Next door, within the same building, a similar space dubbed Sweatshop - hosting art events and rock shows - was founded in July 2012
by Kim Darling, Sarah Rowe, Alex Jochim, Jamie Danielle Hardy, Dan Cavanagh, & Caitlin Little.
In 2015, a wall was knocked down and the two became one under the name PETSHOP.
In 2018, PETSHOP expanded further north, to encompass 2725, 2727, & 2729 N. 62nd Street.
This new addition holds additional studio spaces, along with the offices, meeting space, and storage for Benson First Friday.
Current contributors & studio artists include Joe Addison, Mo O'Brien, Nell Horgan & Aleta Vaughan, Gabe Johnosn and Brick & Hoarder Vintage.
Additional past contributors to the space include
Stefanie Monge, Joe Benson, Nathan Young, Joel van Brandwijk, Tom Flaherty, Anthony Licari, Ryan Tantillo, Jilawan Bunnimit & others.
